Developing Congregational Identity

Pittsburgh Theological Seminary will offer “Pastoral Ministry for Developing Congregational Identity” led by the Rev. Dr. Timothy Son, Tues., Nov. 2, 9, and 16 from 10:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

The vitality and the vision of a congregation often depend critically on how clearly the congregation communicates a corporate sense of “who we are.” When the members of a congregation understand and share this clearer sense of their own corporate identity, they can create and nurture a more vital and thriving congregational life. In this course, participants will (1) explore ways in which they can investigate and discover a core understanding of their congregational identity, (2) investigate the critical roles of pastoral and educational leadership in nurturing that corporate sense of identity, and (3) develop effective ways to express the corporate identity of a congregation through concrete, creative ministries, in order to accomplish the vision and purpose of each congregation as the Body of Christ.

Son joined the Seminary faculty in 2005 as assistant professor of Christian education and youth ministry. Previously, he served as adjunct professor in Christian education at New Brunswick Theological Seminary and New York Theological Seminary. He is a graduate of Cornell University (B.A.), Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div. and Th.M.), and Columbia
University (Ed.D.).
