What is Tuition Exchange Program?
Pittsburgh Theological Seminary is a member of the Tuition Exchange Inc (TE).For incoming students, PTS may be able to offer full tuition scholarships if referred by the program. See the Liaison Officer on the campus referring you and the Tuition Exchange website for details.
Tuition Exchange Program for PTS Employees' Dependents
Dependents taking advantage of this program may receive a tuition scholarship at member schools. It is at the discretion of the importing institution whether to offer the scholarship. Therefore, applicants are encouraged to apply for more than one TE participating school. PTS's guidelines for making the award follow:
The TE program provides the opportunity for family members of PTS faculty and staff to receive undergraduate tuition scholarships at member institutions. More than 600 colleges and universities participate. In exchange, PTS will award Tuition Exchange grants to qualifying incoming students.
- The TE program is a scholarship program, not a fringe benefit provided by Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
- Only dependents of full-time, permanent faculty and staff are eligible to apply for participation in the TE program.
- Certification for the TE program does not guarantee acceptance at another TE member institution or insure a TE scholarship.
- PTS is allowed to export three new students each year. Selection process will based on the employee's years of service.

PTS Guidelines for Exchange Participants:
- Eligible Employee: Any full-time, permanent employee of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
- Eligible Family Member: Any spouse of an Eligible Employee or a child or legal ward under the age of 24 of an Eligible Employee.
- Applicant: An Eligible Family Member who has applied for full-time admission as an undergraduate to a college or university that participates in the Tuition Exchange program. Scholarships are not granted for graduate study, non-degree study, or second undergraduate degrees.
- Maximum Scholarship: Tuition Exchange scholarships will not exceed a maximum of 4 years or 8 semester units per Eligible Employee. The units may be divided among the Eligible Family Members, but a TE scholarship will be awarded to only one of them at a time and each of them must undertake the eligibility and application process.
- By October 1 of the preceding academic year family members of PTS employees who are seeking TE program certification will notify the TE Liaison Officer of intent to apply for TE certification by completing the on-line PTS Tuition Exchange Application Form found in my.pts.edu. At PTS, the TE Liaison Officer is the Director of Financial Aid.
- If the number of applicants for certification exceed the number of allowable exports, applicants will be selected based on the related Eligible Employee’s years of completed PTS service (month, day, year). If an applicant is related to two Eligible Employees, the employee with the highest seniority should apply. In the case of applicants whose eligible employees have equal seniority, the next level of priority will be determined by financial need; measured by the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Applications for TE certification shall be made to the TE Liaison Officer and shall be acted upon by a selection committee composed of the TE Liaison Officer, the President (or his/her designee), and an appointee made by the President. Employees with family members currently eligible or eligible within 4 years are not allowed to serve on the committee. Should the TE Liaison Officer become ineligible to serve on the committee, the President will appoint another committee member. Should the President be ineligible to serve on the committee his/her designee shall serve on the committee in the President’s place and appoint all other members otherwise to be appointed by the President.
- Information concerning selected applicants will be sent to the institutions identified in the application. The institutions will then determine who is awarded a TE scholarship. Employees are reminded that TE scholarships are competitive, and selection by PTS does not guarantee that a scholarship offer will be made by the desired institution.
- Employees who join PTS who already have an Eligible Family Member participating in Tuition Exchange will be recertified in the program for a maximum of 2 years or 4 semesters including previous awards from other TE member schools. After that a new application will be required following the procedure outlined above.
Important Application Considerations
- If your dependent (based on the IRS definition of dependent) wishes to use the TE program, check out the schools listed on TE's website.
- Complete the TE online application.
- Applications must be received no later than October 1 of the year preceding the first academic year to be covered by the scholarship.
- Please be mindful that TE Scholarships are competitive, and certification does not guarantee a scholarship offer.
- Those who have not previously received a TE scholarship will be given first consideration.
This policy is subject to change and revocation at any time by the President or the selection committee.
