Dr. Edith
M. Humphrey is
the William F. Orr* professor of New Testament at Pittsburgh
Theological Seminary. An Anglican layperson, she was professor of
scripture at Augustine College, Ottawa, Canada, from 1997-2002,
where she served as dean. Before her service at Augustine College,
she had an extended career as lecturer at several colleges and
universities in Canada. Humphrey completed her doctorate at McGill
University, Montreal. As well as authoring articles for the academy
and church, Humphrey has written four books including The Ladies
and the Cities: Transformation and Apocalyptic Identity in Joseph
and Aseneth, 4 Ezra, the Apocalypse and The Shepherd of Hermas (JSOT
Sheffield, 1995), Joseph and Aseneth (GAP; Sheffield Academic
Press, 2000), Ecstasy and Intimacy: When the Holy Spirit Meets
the Human Spirit (Eerdmans, 2005) and And I Turned to See the
Voice: The Rhetoric of Vision in the New Testament (Baker
Academic, 2007). She is also a co-author of Longing for God:
Anglicans Talk about Revelation, Nature, Culture, and Authority
(ABC Publishing). Her research interests include rhetorical and literary studies, biblical theology, Eastern Orthodoxy, and current issues in the Church, including human sexuality and worship. She is in the beginning stages of research for a book on catholic worship in the Church, across traditions and through the centuries. Active in the Church, Humphrey speaks frequently at church and seminary events, keeping in touch as an advisory theologian with the Canadian Church and serving on the Commission on Ministry for the Pittsburgh Diocese. Humphrey also has a passion for music: prior to moving to PTS, she directed the music and played the organ at St. George's Anglican Church in Ottawa. Now a member of Church of the Ascension in Oakland, she is an enthusiastic member of the PTS choir, and the oboist in a musical ensemble at PTS. Along with her husband Chris, Humphrey makes her home in Stanton Heights with their teen-age daughter, Joëlle, who is a student at Chatham University, Pittsburgh. The couple has two grown daughters, Meredith Burnett (an MA student with McGill's Religious Studies faculty) who is married to Joshua Burnett and Alexandra Tiel who is married to Brian Tiel. The Humphreys have three grandchildren, Madeleine Anne Tiel, Katherine Eva Burnett, and Rachael Lauren Tiel. To learn more about Humphrey, visit http://www.edithhumphrey.net. Orr served on the Seminary's faculty from 1936 until his retirement in 1974. To honor his work in nurturing seminarians and parishioners throughout Western Pennsylvania, PTS named Orr an honorary alumnus. Humphrey is the third incumbent to hold this Chair. |
