The trailer \u201cleaked.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Be honest. You were pumped to watch it. So were people in your congregation. As a minister or pastor or preacher, you ought to know something about the storied rivalry between Batman and Superman.<\/p>\n

If you really wanted some insight into the rivalry between these titans, you don\u2019t have to watch the trailer. Just look at the history of the two superheroes.<\/p>\n

The history hasn\u2019t always been rosy. Let me show you what I mean:<\/p>\n

1. Double Dating \u2013 1940<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bob Kane, creator of Batman, and Joe Schuster, one of the creators of Superman, enjoyed going on double dates together. They liked telling the girls that they were out with Batman and Superman. [1]<\/p>\n

2. Siegel\u00a0v Kane \u2013 1947<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1947, Jerry Siegel, one of the creators of Superman, accused his publishers and his long-time friend Bob Kane of stealing his idea. He charged that, \u201cBatman is really just Superman with a mask on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Obviously, this didn\u2019t stick. Everyone knows they\u2019re different people. Batman is much crankier than Superman and drives a much more expensive car.<\/p>\n

3. BFFs \u2013 1948<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHe received the shock of his life. Then, as soon as he could collect his wits, He hastily summoned his close friend, the famous Batman, the only person in the world who is aware of his double identity.\u201d<\/p>\n

This quote is from the 1948 radio show \u201cThe Adventures of Superman.\u201d When Clark Kent\u2019s Superman costume is stolen in \u201cMystery of the Stolen Costume,\u201d Superman turns to the only person he can \u2013 Batman.<\/p>\n

Together they battled the forces of Mafioso, Biggie Conroy.<\/p>\n

Digital copies of this radio program can be purchased easily. It\u2019s pretty awesome in a nostalgic, historical way especially while mowing the lawn.<\/p>\n

4. Lois Lane v Batman \u2013 1960’s<\/strong><\/p>\n

Didn\u2019t expect that, did you?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s true. Lois Lane actually went up against Batman \u2013 and won. In the 1960\u2019s her comic \u201cSuperman\u2019s Girl Friend Lois Lane\u201d actually sold more copies than Batman. The publishers considered \u201coffing\u201d the brooding detective until he was saved by an unexpected hero \u2013 Adam West.<\/p>\n

5. Box Office (ongoing)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Top grossing Superman movie? Man of Steel at $291 million.<\/p>\n

Top grossing Batman movie? The Dark Knight at $533 million. [2]<\/p>\n

6. Virtual Battle (ongoing)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Batman: Arkham City was one of the fastest selling videogames of all time, selling more than 6 million copies in less than a year.<\/p>\n

Lego Batman holds a world record as one of the best-selling superhero video games of all time, surpassing even the Arkham games.<\/p>\n

Superman, on the other hand, hasn\u2019t fared so well in video games. Some people consider the video game \u201cSuperman: The New Adventures\u201d to be one of the worst video games of all time.<\/p>\n

7. Justice League v Bizarro League \u2013 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this brilliant little piece of content marketing we discover the depth of Batman\u2019s distrust of Superman.<\/p>\n

Ultimately they have to work together, but there are several moments over the course of this short film where\u00a0Batman threatens to wage war on the \u201calien.\u201d<\/p>\n

Naturally we could have spent some serious time debating the significance of Superman as a model for American identity, or Batman as a type of cosmogonic warrior (both of which have been done convincingly), but let\u2019s be honest. You wouldn\u2019t read that blog, and this list will be much more practically handy when you talk to the congregant who posted the trailer on Facebook.<\/p>\n
