The 2024 Distinguished Alumnus in Academia is <span class=\"fontstyle0\">Dr. Kenneth H. Yount \u201972<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Distinguished Alumnus in Academia: Dr. Kenneth H. Yount is a retired professor of political science and history and former provost and vice president for academic affairs at Alderson Broaddus University. <\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">He earned a bachelor\u2019s in political science from Alderson Broaddus, <\/span><em><span class=\"fontstyle2\">summa cum laude<\/span><\/em><span class=\"fontstyle0\">, a master\u2019s in political science from the University of Pittsburgh, a master\u2019s in religious education from PTS, <\/span><em><span class=\"fontstyle2\">cum laude<\/span><\/em><span class=\"fontstyle0\">, and a Ph.D. in political science from West Virginia University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\">At various times while on the faculty at Alderson Broaddus from 1974 to 2012, Ken also served as director of the honors program, chair of the division of social sciences, director of admissions, instructor in political science and journalism, and director of public information. He also served on the religious ministries committee, frequently preached in chapel, and spoke regularly for the university\u2019s Baptist Campus Ministries. Prior to his tenure at Alderson Broaddus, Ken worked as an editor and writer for the <\/span><em><span class=\"fontstyle2\">Beckley Post-Herald <\/span><\/em><span class=\"fontstyle0\">and as an editor and columnist for the <\/span><em><span class=\"fontstyle2\">Fairmont Times-West Virginian<\/span><\/em><span class=\"fontstyle0\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-25587 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-w-Award-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-w-Award-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-w-Award-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-w-Award-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-w-Award-300x400.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-w-Award-850x1133.jpeg 850w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-w-Award-rotated.jpeg 1512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\">Ken is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his teaching. He was chosen by students as Faculty Merit Professor of the Year or Outstanding Professor several times, was twice honored for excellence in teaching by the American Political Science Association, and was a three-time finalist for the West Virginia Faculty Merit Professor of the Year Award. In May 2023 he was named \u201cPoet Laureate\u201d of Barbour County, W.Va.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\">A native of Ford City, Pa., Ken has traveled to all 50 states, every province in Canada, and 25 countries in Europe. Alongside his wife, Carol, he has visited all seven continents, culminating in a trip to Antarctica in 2014. During that trip, Ken was named \u201cPoet Laureate of Antarctica\u201d after winning a poetry contest among the 85 entries on the trip.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25588\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25588\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25588 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-Antarctica-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-Antarctica-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-Antarctica-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ken-Antarctica.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25588\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ken in Antarctica, where he completed travel to seven continents and was named &#8220;Poet Laureate of Antarctica&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\">Ken has always been active in his community, including nonprofit work, political service, and<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">\u00a0religious education. He has been a Sunday school teacher, fill-in preacher, moderator for the Union Baptist Association in his area of West Virginia, and president of Baptist Theological Fellowship. He has engaged in foreign mission work in India, Thailand, and Bolivia. Ken is an accomplished writer who has produced works on history, travel, and government.
