Challenged by Jesus\u2019 parable of the Good Samaritan and inspired by Mr. Fred Rogers &#8217;62, who sang, \u201cI have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you!\u201d, I am writing this blog to introduce you to some of my neighbors, whom I want you to know. They are students in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/doctor-of-ministry\">Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) Program<\/a>, for which I am honored to serve as the director. They work with diverse populations, whom they have come to see as neighbors and care for lovingly. I hope by the end of this series, you will get to know our Doctor of Ministry students, their ministries, as well as see those whom they serve as siblings in Christ, as neighbors near and far.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019d like to introduce you to my neighbor The Rev. Dr. Andrew Taylor-Troutman. Andrew is the senior pastor of Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church in North Carolina. He is the author of <\/em>This is The Day<em>, a slender book with a long subtitle (seriously, look it up!). In May 2024, he graduated with his Doctor of Ministry degree in Public Theology and Creative Writing.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u2014 The Rev. Dr. Donna Giver-Johnston, director of the Doctor of Ministry program<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Glossary of Neighbors of Our Church<\/h2>\n<p>Alcoholics Anonymous: neighbors who are strong because they admit they are weak and brave because they take a \u201cfearless moral inventory\u201d of their past. See also FOB (Friend of Bill); GUS (Grand Universal Spirit).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30789 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cardinal-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cardinal-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cardinal-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cardinal-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cardinal-850x566.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cardinal.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Black Baptists: neighboring congregation that is the oldest Christian church in our county; recently invited our church to attend the 172nd anniversary that \u201cwas a Holy Ghost party, and a Holy Ghost party don\u2019t stop!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Cardinalis cardinalis<\/em>: red-suited avian neighbors, not Roman Catholic officials, who began to thrive when\u00a0<em>Homo sapiens<\/em>\u00a0in neighborhood began a native plant project.<\/p>\n<p>Dogs (you didn\u2019t think I could keep up the double letters through the entire alphabet, did you?): our church maintains a half-mile trail through the surrounding woods, which is canine-friendly and attracts dozens of friendly canines and their people.<\/p>\n<p><em>El V\u00ednculo Hispano<\/em>: our county\u2019s \u201cadvocacy, leadership development, and direct services organization serving Hispanic immigrants and their families.\u201d Our church hosted a celebration for graduating high school seniors from their\u00a0<em>Orgullo<\/em>\u00a0Latinx Pride Youth Program.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30784 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/food-pantry-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/food-pantry-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/food-pantry-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/food-pantry-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/food-pantry-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/food-pantry-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/food-pantry-300x450.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/food-pantry-850x1275.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/food-pantry-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Food Pantries: Jesus said, \u201cYou give them something to eat,\u201d and these employees and volunteers answered. See also Fire Station, our neighbors up the street where we take leftovers from our weekly church suppers.<\/p>\n<p>Garden Angels: 1. a group in our church who maintains the Remembrance Garden around the columbarium. 2. a community group that takes care of yard work for neighbors who have been hospitalized or are experiencing ongoing health issues.<\/p>\n<p>Hummingbirds:\u00a0neighbors maintain feeders as well as plants for these \u201cflying jewels\u201d (<em>Joyas voladoras<\/em>), who, in turn, have inspired many hearts. See Doyle, Brian.<\/p>\n<p>In-Focus Photography: a group of camera-happy neighbors who meet weekly at our church and display photographs from around the world for all to see.<\/p>\n<p>Juneteenth Celebration: a yearly celebration of Black joy at the emancipation from slavery and ongoing commitment to equity and justice. See Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4.<\/p>\n<p>Little Libraries: tiny boxes made to look like houses with swinging doors that are scattered throughout our community; anyone is free to open and take a book or give a book.<\/p>\n<p>Markets: particularly farmers, but also pottery and crafts, often with live music performances and games for children and children at heart.<\/p>\n<p>Newman Center: Roman Catholic neighbors at local university; host vigils open to public following mass murder at schools and colleges.<\/p>\n<p>Open Mics: neighbors perform at coffeeshops, breweries, or libraries on their guitars, dulcimers, or harmonicas; they sing or recite poems. See also Fire Station.<\/p>\n<p>Trailer Park: neighbors off the beaten path; site of our after-school tutoring program. See Rich.<\/p>\n<p>Unitarian Universalists: the pastor accepts apologies from Presbyterians regarding the egregious execution of Michael Servetus in John Calvin\u2019s Geneva.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30787 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Haw_River-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Haw_River-266x300.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Haw_River-300x339.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pts.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Haw_River.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/>Vultures: head of organic cleanup crew; when perched in trees or atop sanctuary, flock is known as a committee, a term loved by their Presbyterian neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>Watershed, Haw River: \u201cMay what I do flow from me like a river, no forcing and no holding back, the way it is with children.\u201d See Rilke, Rainer Marie<\/p>\n<p>FedEx: delivery workers who eat lunch at one of our church\u2019s picnic tables or in the shade of the trees.<\/p>\n<p>YoungLife and other evangelical groups: neighbors with different theologies, yet partners in service projects.
