Students from the Missiology class led chapel this week. Services were thematically guided by the idea that worship and mission ought to always be held together since worship and mission build up and express each other. One of the most significant moments in worship this week was hearing the Word of God read in different languages. We heard Scripture read in German, Chinese, Vietnamese, Melanesin Pidgin – a native language of Papua New Guinea – and I had the privilege of reading Scripture in Korean.
This was especially meaningful in light of Monday’s communion service which aimed to celebrate the unity that is expressed in Missions. Sharing the Bread and the Cup with faculty, staff, and students alike, embodied the invitation for all the nations to the Table of the Lord. This week of worship culminated to a service where representatives of the various PTS mission trips shared a word about what they would be doing in the far reaches of this world. We were able to pray for the teams as they prepare to leave to various corners of the world during our Spring Break, as a response to what they are learning here.
All of the trips are sponsored by the World Mission Initiative and in partnership with local congregations. I continue to draw upon the experiences that I had in Southeast Asia during my first year of seminary as I reflect on what it means to participate in a fully embodied ministry. It is an unbelievable blessing to have the presence of WMI right here on our campus. This organization provides students with life changing opportunities to participate in the work of the Kingdom in the midst of this think-tank called Seminary.
