“What are some books that every pastor should read?”

PTS faculty were asked this question in spring 2023. Consider these 10 recommendations for pastoral care:

  • Herbert Anderson and Edward Foley, Mighty Stories, Dangerous Rituals: Weaving Together the Human and the Divine
  • Lynne Baab, The Power of Listening: Building Skills for Mission and Ministry
  • Jean Stairs, Listening for the Soul: Pastoral Care and Spiritual Direction
  • Edward Wimberly, Recalling Our Own Stories: Spiritual Renewal for Religious Caregivers

 Conflict

  • Donna Hicks, Dignity: Its Essential Role in Resolving Conflict
  • Ronald Richardson, Creating a Healthier Church: Family Systems Theory, Leadership, and Congregational Life

Grief and Trauma

  • Melissa Kelley, Grief: Contemporary Theory and the Practice of Ministry
  • Kate Bowler, Everything Happens for a Reason and other Lies I’ve Loved
  • Barbara Holmes, Crisis Contemplation: Healing the Wounded Village
  • Steve Leder, The Beauty of What Remains: How Our Greatest Fear Becomes Our Greatest Gift
