Praying in Color Workshop Prayer is supposed to be simple, right? “Just have a conversation, a little chat with God. Tell Jesus what’s on your heart and your mind.” Those words are welcome to some of us and terrifying to others. What if I don’t know what to say or can’t sit still or get distracted? What if I’m not even sure God is listening or cares? How do you pray when words become a barrier rather than a pathway to God? When author Sybil MacBeth faced these prayer dilemmas, she picked up paper, a pen, and some colored markers and created an active, visual, and playful way to enter into prayer. Join her for an introduction to this meditative faith practice called Praying in Color. We will learn praying in color as an intercessory prayer practice for both adults and children. No artistic skill necessary!
We come together, not as prayer experts, but as a community of God’s humble people drawing near to our Beloved Creator. Using a pen and colored markers/pencils gives us an entry way to calm our bodies and minds by including our fidgetiness and wandering minds. With our eyes open, mouths shut, and hands engaged, we will create a space for being present to God, an ebb and flow between silence and words. We form a big prayer closet. Within that big closet, we are each hunkered in our little prayer closets of paper and pens--a community of pray-ers.
Praying in color is an accessible way to pray for adults, teenagers, and children. NO artistic ability is necessary. Lines, blobs, dots, squiggles…are the only art vocabulary you need! This is not an art project or a coloring exercise, but a playful way to stay in our chairs while we sit in prayer. For more information, explore my website: https://prayingincolor.com/
