Overview
The Albright-Deering lecture and conference at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary is sure to energize your imagination around youth and young adults in our congregations, communities, and neighborhoods. For more than 25 years the Rev. Dr. Frederick Edie and the Rev. Dr. Reginald Blount have been thinking together about faith formation of young people. Their respective areas of expertise will come together in this day-long event to consider how to reclaim a sense of discipleship in our faith traditions. Edie will work with us to consider how to bring young people to the heart of the congregation through corporate worship. Blount will then take us from corporate worship into the world asking, who are we sending our congregations (and young people) forth to be in the world? This interactive day will be full of practical application, conversation, and lecture to stimulate our collective imagination.

Presenters
Frederick Edie holds a bachelor's from Furman University, an M.Div. from Vanderbilt University, and a Ph.D. from Emory University. Edie is an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church and has served congregations on both coasts in youth and educational ministries. Edie serves as associate professor of the practice of Christian education at Duke Divinity School. His focus is on Christian education, youth ministry, and practical theology. His research interests include exploring the relationships between Christian worship and Christian identity, creating rich contexts for the formation of Christians, and constructing “full-bodied” epistemologies.
Edie’s book, Book, Bath, Table and Time, explores what goes on at Duke Youth Academy and, in particular, suggests how congregational youth ministries may benefit from attention to corporate worship as a crucial zone of formation for youth.
Reginald Blount holds a bachelor's from Tuskeegee University, an M.Div from Candler School of Theology at Emory, and a doctor of philosophy from the Garrett-Evangelical/Northwestern University joint program in religious and theological studies, focusing on the areas of Christian education and youth ministry. Blount serves as the Murray H. Leiffer Associate Professor of Formation, Leadership and Culture at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. His research and writings have centered on adolescent and young adult identity formation, African American identity formation, and Christian education and strategic leadership in the Black church. He speaks and teaches internationally helping faith communities envision new and creative ways to minister to, with, and on behalf of young people, engage in transformative Christian education, and foster congregational and community renewal. Blount is an ordained elder and pastor of Arnett Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Morgan Park neighborhood of Chicago.
Blount's book, Let Your Light Shine: Mobilizing for Justice with Children and Youth, challenges readers to champion hope by engaging in their own work of justice for, and with, children. He has contributed numerous articles and chapters over the course of his career. Of particular note, Blount served as contributor to the CEB Student Bible (Common English Bible) along with his daughter, Deborah Ayanna, that was published in 2015.
