Pittsburgh Theological Seminary honored John “Jack” S. Isherwood with the John Anderson Award of Merit during the Seminary’s 219th Commencement service June 5, 2015.
Named for Pastor John Anderson, founding president of Pittsburgh Seminary’s antecedent school (Service Seminary, begun in 1794), the Anderson Award is bestowed by the Board of Directors on individuals who have contributed distinctive service to the Seminary and community at large.
“Jack's eight years as chair of the Board and a total of 15 years as a Board member attest to his lasting impact on the Seminary,” said Sandra Lamb, current Board chair. “He was the longest serving chair of the board at least since the late 1950s. Not only did he devote countless hours in leadership and conversation with the Seminary community but he also audited nearly every course in the curriculum. His abiding determination to carry out God's will for the Seminary, his sense of joy in life and his faith, and his prayer for those ‘we love and ought to love’ are hallmarks of his leadership.”
Isherwood served as the PTS Board from 2000-2015 and was chair from 2006-2014. He chaired the Presidential Search Committee that called the Seminary’s fifth president the Rev. Dr. William J. Carl III. Additionally Isherwood served as chair of the Student Affairs Committee and served on the Advancement, Nominating, and Property Committees.
Isherwood also served on a number of Pittsburgh community boards. His management roles over the past four decades have included managing principal of Birchmere Investments Inc., president and CEO of Metalized Paper Corp., president and CEO of Pittsburgh Brewing Co., president of Pittsburgh Food and Beverage, and COO of G. Heileman Brewing Company.
A graduate of Grove City College, at Pittsburgh Seminary Jack audited some 40 courses taught by more than 20 faculty members. Recognizing his extraordinary dedication to theological education, the Pittsburgh Seminary Alumnae/i Association named him an honorary alumnus last fall. Isherwood continues to be dedicated member of Meridian United Presbyterian Church.
