Pittsburgh Theological Seminary will host a free public event “Hamba Kahle, Tata Madiba (‘Go well, Father Madiba’): The Life and Legacy of Nelson Mandela” Wed., Dec. 11, 2013, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Hicks Chapel. This conversation with the Rev. Drs. Johannes Swart, R. Drew Smith, and Harold Lewis will reflect on Mandela and his impact on justice and reconciliation in the world.
The event will include a gospel choir, video presentation, and panel discussion with Pittsburgh Seminary faculty. Jannie Swart, associate professor of world mission and evangelism, was the national director of training and development for the Democratic Party in South Africa, a new, emerging political party in opposition to the apartheid policies of the National Party and pastor of a multicultural Dutch Reformed church in Johannesburg. He was with Mandela on more than one occasion in official capacities. Drew Smith, professor of urban ministry, is an internationally known leader and co-convener of the Transatlantic Roundtable on Religion and Race, having led conferences all over Africa and served as a Fulbright Professor at the University of Pretoria. The third panelist, Canon Harold Lewis, is the former Rector at Calvary Episcopal Church. Lewis has served as an adjunct faculty member at PTS and the College of the Transfiguration in Grahamstown, South Africa, and is the author of A Church for the Future: South Africa as the Crucible for Anglicanism in the New Century.
