Since graduating from Pittsburgh Seminary in 2003, Steve Falci has been combining his career in investments with the values and beliefs that were central to his studies at PTS. As a Chartered Financial Analyst with both a bachelor’s and an MBA from New York University in addition to his M.A. from the Seminary, he’s made it a point to work for companies focused on sustainable investing.
After graduation from PTS, Steve accepted a position as chief investment officer, equities with Calvert Investments, a leading provider of socially responsible mutual funds. While at Calvert and living in the Washington DC area, Steve served as a member of the parish council at Holy Trinity, a parish in Georgetown led by the Jesuits. Steve notes that, while at Holy Trinity, “I was blessed to have the opportunity to do the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, which has continued to guide me in the integrating my life and vocation.” In 2008 Steve moved to Dublin, Ireland, where he led the sustainable investing efforts of KBC Asset Management, Ltd., and its successor firm, Kleinwort Benson Investors. Steve and his family “spent five wonderful years in Dublin,” where he continued his vocational involvement with Jesuit ministries focused on spirituality and leadership.
One aspect of that involvement is Steve’s leadership in the Woodstock Business Conference (WBC), a network of business leaders who desire to integrate faith, family, and business in their life. “The WBC, grounded in my tradition as a Roman Catholic and open to all people of faith, is committed to the conviction that ethics and values are rooted in one’s faith,” says Steve. “As a group of professionals, we support each other in looking for ways to contribute to the development of a corporate culture reflective of our faith and values and exercising a beneficial influence on society at large.” Steve is convinced that sustainable investing is one important way to do the latter.
Steve and his family moved back to the U.S. in 2013 and are now in Portsmouth, N.H., where Steve is chief investment officer at Pax World Investments, a leader in sustainable investing. An early pioneer in socially responsible investment founded by two ministers, Pax World launched the first socially responsible mutual fund in 1971. “I’m happy and honored to be working at a company whose culture and values I admire and where we hope to contribute to making a difference at a critical time,” he says. “By informing my mind, my studies at Pittsburgh Seminary helped shape the ways I integrate my faith with my professional life for a very satisfying and, I hope, difference-making vocation.”
P.S. Steve will be on campus Thurs., Feb. 18, 2016, to present a lecture on sustainable investing. Be sure to check back for more information.
