Urban Artistry, Aesthetics, and Social Ministry Videos

In October 2021, the Seminary's Metro-Urban Institute presented "Urban Artistry, Aesthetics, and Social Ministry," a symposium in celebration of their 30th anniversary. 

Below are select presentations and speaker bios from that event.

Textile Art

Sara Trail learned to sew at the young age of 4, and is now a successful author, sewing teacher, and pattern and fabric designer. While attending UC Berkeley, Sara created a quilt in memory of Trayvon Martin, and her love for sewing and passion for social justice intertwined. After graduating from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, she founded the Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA). As Founder of SJSA, Sara actively travels to facilitate lectures and workshops. She is also key in developing and implementing the artistic vision of the organization.​


Painting and Public Art

Jasmine Green is a Black visual artist born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa. Jasmine strives to create artwork that tells the story of Black women in as bold and creative ways as possible. She works almost exclusively in acrylic paint, with the brief inclusion of markers, clay, jewelry, and found materials. Jasmine is currently a member of 1Hood Media, an artist collective based in Pittsburgh that is dedicated to utilizing art as a means of raising awareness about social justice matters affecting people around the world.​
