June 7-July 19, 2026
We invite applications for the six-week Miller Undergraduate Summer Fellowship. Miller Fellows collaborate with Seminary staff and community partners to facilitate the Institute’s Neighborhood Scholars Academy. The Academy gathers rising juniors and seniors in high school from across the country for transformative learning focused on civic engagement, leadership development, and vocational discernment. Miller Fellows participate in the Academy as teaching assistants and facilitators who “learn while they lead.” They foster an immersive and supportive community for the Academy as they participate in discussion-based classroom learning and practice-based contextual learning. Fellows work together to make connections between ideas and action. And they challenge one another to take risks to move beyond their comfort zones and grow as leaders who care about their community and want to change the world.
If you are an “undergraduate” (entering college or university next fall, taking a gap year, or still completing your degree), if you want to grow as a learner and a leader, and if you have a passion to invest in youth, then you are ready to be a Miller Fellow. Participating in the Miller Fellowship will empower you to grow personally, spiritually, and intellectually, even as you lead others in their own growth. You will deepen your understanding of your life and work as a calling through which you can serve God and neighbor in whatever occupation or profession you are pursuing in your studies.
The Miller Fellowship integrates reflection and action: thinking and doing. It takes the ideas found in books, music, film, and other media and makes them come alive in real world situations. Fellows think and talk about challenging ideas in classroom-based Seminars. They put what they learn into campus through community-based Exploratorys at places like the Garfield Community Farm, OASIS Community Development, and the Neighborhood Resilience Project. In Seminars and Exploratorys, Fellows don’t just talk about making a difference or changing the world, they do something about it alongside leaders who are working for peace and justice every day.
Miller Fellows receive a $6,000 stipend for their work with the Neighborhood Scholars Summer Academy. This includes participation in online training and preparation prior to the Academy. Room and board, as well as supplies and expenses are covered. Miller Fellows are responsible for their own transportation to and from Pittsburgh. (Limited funds are available to subsidize travel costs.) Those who complete the program also are eligible to apply for additional funding and continued learning through the Hurlbert Family Fellowship for Contextual Ministry and Community Research.
Preference will be given to applicants who have completed at least two years of undergraduate study. Strong consideration will be given to younger applicants with compelling recommendations. Application deadline: Feb. 16, 2026. Selections will be made by March 30, 2026. The application will be open soon.
Applicants should provide at least one letter of reference. Reference forms for applicants can be found here.
